Not all changelings are fit for life in a hive. But that doesn't mean they're capable of life outside it, either. Join one such changeling as he tries to find his place in Equestria, and what the difference is between survival and living.
Idol Hooves holds a special place in Equestria. He's probably the only exiled changeling to serve in the Royal Guard, or at least, that's what he expects, as exiles don't really broadcast that fact. However, it's well known that Princess Celestia loves all of her little ponies, and her guards perhaps more so, and that makes it one of the best ways for a changeling to discreetly feed.
But how does a changeling even get there, let alone get exiled in the first place? For that matter, why would it ever go to Canterlot? Set a number of years before the series proper, before Luna’s redemption, Idol details how he was exiled, the ponies he’s met, and the series of misadventures that led him to joining the Royal Guard, and should continue a good ways into the series, as something of an alternate perspective.
Soon, he’ll have to deal with a boisterous new princess to serve and a royal wedding in the works bringing a third to power. Will his old instincts bring this new life crashing down around him? What precipitates Chrysalis’s ill-fated assault on Canterlot? Is it really so wrong for a changeling to enjoy good craftsmanship to an obsessive degree?

They aren't absolutely necessary, but the intention is to provide some background or additional material. Things like Topaz's research notes on Changelings, stories involving the other characters, and various insane things Idol has done that don't quite fit into the main plot. They might be chipper, they might be sad, but they're all canon to the main fic... or to whoever from the story is relating them.
Chapter 1 is the Nurse, mentioned briefly in Moonlighting, who brought Idol the Nymph.
A reformed Discord decided to spread a new kind of chaos, but he doesn't know where. The inhabitants of a war-torn planet are driving themselves to extinction. A lifeless planet is a monument to Order, and that is one thing Discord can't abide.
After spicing the lives of ponies everywhere, Discord decides things are too boring with Equestia and decides to spread his new vision of chaos to other worlds. He finds one such planet on the brink of being rendered lifeless.
As any self respecting god of chaos can tell you; without life there is no change, and no change means no chaos.
Photocopying your butt and mailing it has a long, glorious, and stupid history in Equestria.
Nobles have long held sway over Equestrian culture. They are the trendsetters, the heads of the pack. Simply the way they speak can influence language. When they create compliments, similarly-phrased praise spreads throughout the nation. When they implement insults, ponies create situations for those insults to be used. One insult, in particular, has gone down in history as especially infamous.
I'm talking about butts and the photocopying thereof. This is still Equestrian nobility, after all. It's complicated. And stupid. Mostly stupid.
A young man wakes up in Equestria as a very adorable Alicorn colt, gets forcibly adopted by Luna, and tries to find his way home.

A young man by the name of Oliver Leaf finds himself trapped in another world...as a young colt. A young Alicorn colt.
As if this wasn't bad enough, he's got a terrifying enthusiastic blue one trying to mother him, a pink one competing to do the same, and a white one who does nothing except watch on in amusement.
Add all of this on top of the other personalities that keep trying to take control of his body, and it's little wonder why he keeps trying to run away. Especially when not all of them are quite as innocent as he would like.
This story is very similar when compared with To Run From The Sun, if only because of its short chapters and OOC ponies.

At the village's annual Choosing Ceremony, Starlight Glimmer assigns Double Diamond to impregnate his own sister this heat season. But surely he can't actually go through with that, right?
Dating is ... different in Starlight's village of equality. Every year when heat season begins, instead of messing around with the frenzy and heartbreak of finding a special somepony like in the rest of Equestria, everyone is treated equally: they are simply assigned their perfect match for the season. And then everyone can contribute to creating the next generation of equal residents.
Things take a weird turn for Double Diamond when the mare he's assigned to for this heat season is his own sister, Bunny Hill. Nopony seems terribly concerned about that, least of all Bunny Hill herself. And to suggest that their sacred Choosing Ceremony might have been wrong is just absolute sacrilege! But he can't actually go through with this ... can he?
